International celebrations mark St David’s Day

From Singapore to Sydney, celebrations of St David’s Day took place around the world on the weekend.

Hollywood star Michael Sheen joined members of the St David’s Society of the State of New York at its Manhattan gala dinner in celebration of Wales’s patron saint and the society’s scholarship programme.

In Canada, 50 members of the Victoria Welsh Society came together for a lunch of leek and potato soup, lamb, Welsh cakes and a fashion show of historical costumes made by members of the society.

Meanwhile, the St David’s Society of Singapore hosted a ball where guests enjoyed traditional Welsh food and entertainment from a Tom Jones tribute act.

In Argentina, the Celtic Patagonia Cultural Association hosted a festival to mark St David’s Day and the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the Welsh in Patagonia. The four-day event featured bagpipers, colourful street parades, archery contests and Welsh food stands.

Closer to home, hundreds of people gathered in Cardiff to watch the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards St David’s Day parade, which saw 400 guards march though Roald Dhal Plass as the Band of Welsh Guards performed. Inside the Senedd, people enjoyed Welsh cakes and bara brith as a Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama trombone quartet, Bone Appetit, performed. Dewi the Dragon made a special guest appearance alongside Dame Rosemary Butler AM and Rebecca Evans AM.
