Danish retail brand opens fourth Welsh store

Danish retail brand, Tiger, is further expanding its operations in Wales by opening its fourth store in the retail concourse of the University Hospital of Wales (UHW), Cardiff.

The Nordic homeware brand, which sells a wide variety of stylish, Scandinavian home accessories will occupy a ground floor sales unit in the concourse alongside retailers such as Starbucks, Boots, Nat West and the Post Office.

Led by two female Welsh entrepreneurs, Kate Meuthen-Ley, 38, and Helen Corsi, 33, Tiger opened its first store in Cardiff in December 2013, with stores following in Cwmbran and Carmarthen in 2014. The business’s five-year plan is to open around 12 stores across Wales and the south west.

Locations being considered for new store openings include Aberystwyth, Swansea and Newport and Bristol, Bath and Plymouth in the south west.

The new hospital concourse store will see Mrs Meuthen-Ley and Miss Corsi build on the success of bringing the Danish brand to Wales, with the business turning over more than £1.5 million in its first year of trading.

With its headquarters in Copenhagen, Tiger has been working with the duo as joint venture partners of the brand since September 2013.

Mrs Meuthen-Ley said: “Tiger has been very well-received in Wales and we are both excited and confident about opening more stores. The hospital location is a slightly unusual one, and we are very positive about it.

“Similar sized stores were opened in Copenhagen Airport and a railway station in Sweden, both of which have done really well. UHW has over 1,000 beds and 7,000 staff with all the associated visitors, and our mantra at Tiger – to ‘make a good day’ – is a positive message to brighten up people’s lives.”

The retail unit at the UHW has been handled by agents Cooke & Arkwright for landlord Gentian, a company which develops and advises on retail facilities within the NHS.

Huw Thomas, of Cooke & Arkwright, said: “Attracting a very good use like Tiger to occupy the unit is an excellent result for Gentian and for the hospital’s retail offering. It’s extremely convenient for staff, patients and visitors and we are sure it will prove as popular as the other Welsh Tiger stores.”
