Newport to host literature event exploring Welsh diaspora

A day-long festival of literature exploring the concept and connection of Wales and its ‘borders’ starts this week (4 July) at the Priory Hotel in Caerleon, Newport.

‘Literature on the Lawn – Borderlands’ will be hosted by Dylan Moore, culture editor of The Welsh Agenda, opening with John Lewis Stempel discussing Meadowlands, his 2015 Thwaites Wainwright award-winning title, which deals with a year in the life of a field on the Welsh-English border.

Joining them in the discussion on what it means to write ‘across borders’ are English-born, Welsh published, Tiffany Murray and current Western Mail and Morning Serial author, Tom Anderson.

Other authors exploring the wider reach of Wales around the world include Colin Thomas, discussing the impact of Welsh in north America through his interactive book, The Dragon and the Eagle, voiced by Cerys Matthews.

Nia Davies, editor of Poetry Wales, and Jon Gower, of Y Wladfa, will examine the Welsh settlement in Patagonia, while Dr. Jenni Williams and Dylan Moore will discuss the perils of campaigning for literary freedom in Mexico with PEN Cymru.

Also joining the festival is theatre-maker John Norton, who will be in discussion about his groundbreaking production, Borderlands, the first theatrical production to physically straddle the Severn estuary.

Returning to the idyllic setting of Caerleon’s historic Priory Hotel, Literature on the Lawn is organised by Celf Caerleon Arts Festival. Tickets can be bought here: www.wegottickets.com/event/319132

Performing later in the week (9 July) is Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, at St. Cadoc’s Church, Caerleon at 7.30pm. Tickets are available here: www.wegottickets.com/event/319160
