Major sporting events mark Wales’s Year of Adventure

Registration for two major Welsh sporting events are open for entry.

This March (26th) sees the IAAF/Cardiff University World Half Marathon Championships take place in Cardiff, with more than 200 of the world’s best athletes from 50 countries descending on the Welsh capital to battle it out on foot over the 13.1m route.

They will be joined by up to 20,000 mass race runners who will get the unique opportunity to ‘Run in the Footsteps of Champions’ by completing the same iconic route around Cardiff at the same time as the world’s best runners.

Registration for Wales’s biggest cycling event is also open. Taking place on May 22nd, Velothon Wales 2016 is a closed road sportive with up to 18,000 spaces for cyclists wanting to take the 140km route.

The sporting events coincide with the 2016 Year of Adventure, which is part of Visit Wales’s themed years approach, aiming to provide a focus for investment, project development and marketing.

“This year is the Year of Adventure in Wales, which will celebrate all we have to offer as an adventure destination,” said Deputy Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism, Ken Skates.

“The Rough Guide recently named Wales in the top 10 places to visit in 2016 and paid tribute to us being ‘one of the finest natural playgrounds in Europe’. The Velothon and World Half Marathon present an excellent opportunity for people to sign up and to take part in a challenge during Year of Adventure 2016.

“These two events are excellent examples of the growth of sporting events in Wales in recent years. The events can have a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of those attending, but also inspire the spectators to get more active and have a positive impact on the nation’s health. The Year of Adventure in 2016 is the perfect opportunity to try something new for the first time.”
