Advanced mobile technology developed in Wales is showcased at World Congress

Sophisticated advances in mobile technology developed in Wales will be on show at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week (Monday Feb 24-27), with one company shortlisted for a top award.

The technology ranges from an app to help plan a journey using public transport to software enabling TV news channels to broadcast live from hot spots like Kiev producing superb picture quality over a wide range of network connections.

Caernarfon-based Geosho’s Bwsiti app (meaning ‘a bus for you’ in Welsh) was shortlisted for Smart UK’s most innovative mobile company award, with the winner announced at the Congress on February 25th.

Geosho has developed an intelligent smartphone and tablet based range of integrated apps for public transport agencies, operators and the public to help plan their journeys more effectively.

In addition Geosho provide innovative tourism, culture and heritage mapping, mobile systems and business intelligence tools to over 300 clients in 28 countries around the world.

Paul Sandham of Geosho said: “This is the first time we will be attending the Congress as part of a Welsh Government assisted trade exhibition which provides us with a great opportunity to promote our work and raise our profile on the international stage.”

Bwsiti can identify the location of a bus but also identify any repeated disruptions to the timetabled journey, such as traffic congestion due to a market day, extensive roadworks or school runs.

The provision of anonymised analytics of where people want to travel from, where they want to go and when, can help public transport planners to provide more effective timetables and better located access points.

The clever software developed by Quicklink Video Distribution Services Ltd of Swansea is already being used by N24, Germany’s leading news station, in their coverage of the situation in Kiev.

Richard Rees of Quicklink said: “Funding support from the Welsh Government means we are able to attend more internationals events and network with a more focussed customer base. It means we can gather information and research what other customers want and provide leading next generation technology to compete effectively in a rapidly moving market.”

Economy Minister Edwina Hart said: “Mobile World Congress is one of the top events of its kind and offers a great opportunity for Welsh companies to promote their products and services to an international audience. It enables the Welsh Government to highlight the capability and expertise of Welsh companies working in one of our key sectors and I am delighted our support is helping them participate in this exhibition.”

Cardiff-based Keima which has recently expanded and opened a facility in the US will be meeting clients at the Congress to present the latest advances on their HetNet planning and optimization platform, Overture.

“There is no doubt the end of 2013 has been the beginning of our expansion phase, with the opening of Keima Technologies in the US and our participation on the MIT program,” said its COO, Iris Barcia.

“Exciting times ahead as our technical and business units grow with focus on innovation and technical excellence.”

Keima Technologies Inc. is located in Reston, Virginia, following the demand by operators in the US of Overture’s holistic HetNet planning solution.

For 2014, Keima will continue its participation on advanced technology programmes, such as the one run by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and its collaboration with global organisations and companies, such as the Small Cell Forum (SCF), to fulfil its drive to offer cutting edge network design products worldwide.

Geosho, Quicklink and Keima are amongst eight Welsh businesses heading out to exhibit on the Wales stand at Barcelona and promote their products with support from the Welsh Government.

They will be joined by Aloha Telecommunications, whose European HQ is in Abercynon and South American HQ in Lima, Peru; The Centre of Excellence in Mobile Application and Services (CEMAS) which is based at the University of South Wales; Living Data, Caerphilly, M7 Managed Services Ltd, Nantgarw and myPinPadTM, of Cardiff.
