St David’s Day marked by weekend of celebrations across the globe

From Auckland to Vancouver, celebrations of St David’s Day took place across the world on the weekend.

The St David’s Society of Singapore hosted a Welsh Ball at the Tanglin Club where guests were entertained by Julia Martin, a Shirley Bassey tribute act. Among the guests was the British High Commissioner to Singapore.

Meanwhile, the Dubai Welsh Society hosted a St David’s Day Ball, which was attended by more than 200 guests, including Natural Resources and Food Minister, Alun Davies. Entertainment was provided by the male voice choir, Wails from Wales and the event celebrated the centenary anniversary of Dylan Thomas.

First Minister of Wales, Carwyn Jones, celebrated St David’s Day a day early by ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street while on his four-day visit to the United States.

Mr Jones said at the time: “It’s an honour to open trading on the New York Stock exchange and to put Wales well and truly in the international spotlight ahead of St David’s Day.”

Closer to home, the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport hosted a Celebration of Wales Gala Dinner where sports stars as Sam Warburton and George North, presenter Gethin Jones and music act GLC came together to support a number of charities including, St David’s Hospice, For Luca and 54321Cymru.
