Cardiff Airport is set to increase its capacity by up to 5,000 seats from the summer of 2015 after travel firm Thomson and First Choice re-introduced flights to Antalya, Turkey.
The move to introduce the route is part of the tour operator’s strategy to ensure customers across the UK can fly from their local airport.
The re-introduction of the flight to Antalya, Turkey means Thomson and First Choice now serve three destinations in Turkey, including Dalaman and Bodrum, bringing the total destinations on offer from Cardiff Airport to 27.
Karen Switzer, director of Aviation Planning for Thomson and First Choice, said: “Adding additional capacity from Cardiff and the re-introduction of another Turkish route demonstrates our commitment to Cardiff Airport and the local area, and following the success of similar routes across a number of regional airports, we know that the demand is there.
“Expanding access to our portfolio of destinations and hotels is a key part of our overall strategy and we hope that this move will enhance the holiday experience for our customers.”
Jon Horne, chief executive at Cardiff Airport, welcomed the decision by saying: “This is really great news. We are delighted that Thomson and First Choice are committed to Cardiff Airport and Welsh travellers.
“It’s all about creating more choice and giving the people of Wales further travel options. Turkey is a popular destination, so adding Antalya to the existing two Turkish routes makes perfect sense.”
