Historic life sciences link established between Québec and Wales

The Premier of Québec, Philippe Couillard and First Minister of Wales, Carwyn Jones, have witnessed the historic signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Wales’s Life Sciences Hub and the Québec equivalent, Sherbrooke Innopole.

The collaboration is one of many international partnerships established by Wales’s Life Sciences Hub. In December, the organisation welcomed a visit from Swedish life sciences hub, Medicon Village, as part of its commitment to foster innovation and strengthen relationships on a global scale.

“We want to make Wales the best possible environment for Life Sciences innovation and business growth,” said Carwyn Jones.

“We’re proud in Wales to have genuine excellence in Life Sciences and the Hub is a fantastic, central resource for the sector in Wales. We want this success to continue long into the future, and for this to happen we need to see strong international working between Life Sciences in Wales and the rest of the world. That’s why this signing is so important.”

The Life Sciences Hub acts as a central resource for the whole of the Life Sciences sector in Wales including academic, business, clinical and funding organisations to stimulate interaction, innovation, networking and collaboration.

The Premier of Québec, Philippe Couillard, said: “This Memorandum of Understanding expresses a shared determination to strengthen the links between Québec and Wales, in the economic, research and innovation fields in particular. This new partnership is based on a sector of excellence, which is highly profitable to both our economies and gives them a distinctive character, allowing us to stay in the vanguard of life sciences.”

Dr Ian Barwick, chief operating officer at the Life Sciences Hub, said: “It is an honour to sign the Memorandum of Understanding with Sherbrooke Innopole. The organisation’s ethos mirrors ours in terms of its commitment to stimulating innovation, research in the life sciences sector and making a real difference to the health and wealth of both countries.

“Our members will benefit from having access to a globally recognised hub, which has an advanced research and development infrastructure. In turn, we hope Sherbrooke Innopole will benefit from Wales’s thriving life sciences eco-system that boasts world-class research and a dedication to improving human health on an international scale.

“We’re delighted to have welcomed the Premier of Québec and First Minister of Wales to the Hub, which showcases the breadth of talent we have here in Wales.”
