Three Welsh exporters recognised by Queen’s Award

Three Welsh exporters have been named winners of the 2014 Queen’s Award for International Trade.

Anglesey-based frozen yoghurt producer, Plas Farm, Hengoed-based office furniture designers, Orangebox, and civil engineering company, Dawnus International, of Swansea, have all received the industry accolade, which recognises those businesses that have achieved success in international trade.

Plas Farm has seen its international trade grow by 495 per cent in the last three years, while Dawnus has seen its export success grow since delivering major international civil engineering schemes in Africa since 2010.

The firm’s turnover has increased from £14.2m in 2010 to £86.3m in 2012, and, since the onset of its work in Africa, Dawnus has provided training opportunities to more than 1,500 local people.

Andy Peters, managing director of Dawnus, said: “It is an honour for Dawnus to be recognised by the Queen’s Awards.”

“The Award reflects the hard work our team have put in to successfully win and deliver projects overseas, and the difference we are making to communities in West Africa.”

The latest round of the business awards has seen 162 British firms awarded for their success across three categories, including international trade, innovation and sustainable development. Of the 162 businesses, 110 have been recognised for their developments in exports.

And eight individuals were recognised for enterprise promotion, including Christine Atkinson of the University of South Wales.

Pontypridd-based Concrete Canvas was the only Welsh winner of the innovation award. The company has been recognised for the development of its ground breaking material, which allows many concrete installations to be accomplished up to 10 times faster with less environmental impact.

Will Crawford, director of Concrete Canvas, said: “It’s a great honour to be recognised by such a prestigious award for the hard work and dedication that our team have put into developing the company and the material itself. Excellence in innovation is a key driving force behind our rapid expansion and success both at home and abroad.”

The winners of the 2014 Queen’s Awards will be invited to a royal reception at Buckingham Palace in July 2014 and will be presented with a crystal bowl to mark their success.
