Eight Welsh businesses are travelling to South Africa next week (8 – 15 June) as part of a Welsh Government-led trade mission to visit Johannesburg and Durban, which is timed to coincide with the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) tour of the country.
The trade mission follows the strategy adopted last year by the Welsh Government when a trade visit to Japan, led by Economy Minister Edwina Hart, was linked to the WRU’s summer tour.
Edwina Hart said: “We worked closely with the Welsh Rugby Union to maximise the impact made by Wales in Japan during the latter part of their tour last June which worked well. Wales and South Africa share a passion for rugby and Welsh businesses can benefit from this common interest which links our two countries.
“South Africa offers opportunities for businesses working across the sectors, and the mission will enable delegates to connect with like-minded businesses in two of South African’s most developed cities. The visit has been designed to help companies either explore possibilities of exporting to South Africa or increase their exports.”
The eight Welsh businesses travelling to South Africa include Newport-based firms Industrial Automation and Control Ltd and ABIAC Bulk Handling Ltd, British Research Ltd of Sully, Concrete Canvas of Pontypridd, Digital Secure Systems Limited based in Cardiff, Global Laser of Abertillery, Swansea University-based Kaimai Research and Patchwork Technology of Monmouthshire.
The companies, which represent a number of key sectors in Wales including ICT and advanced materials and manufacturing, will receive a comprehensive briefing about the opportunities in South Africa from UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) in Johannesburg.
Businesses will also benefit from a market briefing from Trade & Invest KwaZulu-Natal and the Durban Chamber of Commerce, who are facilitating a business reception for the visiting businesses to link up with potential contacts.
