Welsh hub plays key role in global growth of mobile banking firm

A mobile banking, payments and commerce technology organisation, with a technology and R&D hub in Nantgarw, south Wales, has doubled its original target of creating 40 jobs in Wales.

Monitise, a world-leader in Mobile Money that provides services to more than 350 financial institutions and other brands globally, opened its Welsh hub in 2011 and now has a team of 80 workers at the site.

This week, Economy Minister Edwina Hart visited the company’s Wales office to meet the team of specialists who work with colleagues around the world to develop services used by some of the leading financial institutions across Europe, Asia and the US.

“Monitise is a major inward investor for Wales that has successfully integrated into the local economy with ongoing job creation,” said Mrs Hart.

“I am delighted that Monitise has found Wales such a great location for its technology R&D hub which is playing a crucial role in the company’s global growth.

“It sends out a strong message that Wales has the skills, workforce and support to help highly innovative and successful companies like Monitise to expand their business.”

With global headquarters in London, the company has 24 million users and strategic partnerships processing three billion mobile transactions annually to the value of over £31 billion.

The Minister met Will Jones, Monitise’s President, EMEA, who hails from Lampeter, and Ben Lidgey, engineering release and knowledge manager at Monitise, who was a member of the Welsh Government’s ICT Curriculum Steering Group which recently forwarded its Report to the Minister for Education and Skills.

Will Jones said: “I am delighted the Minister had the opportunity to learn more about our global business for which our Wales office plays a crucial role, and how we can jointly contribute to the growth of the mobile and software development industry in Wales.

“We are recruiting people and working with local universities and training providers to look at ways to increase the mobile and software development skill set in south Wales to support not just our own growth but also that of the region. Strengthening the skills available in the area generally will certainly bring benefits to our office and business.”
